Money and the financing of the economy - 2026-02
Published on 27th of March 2026
Over one year, monetary financing to the private sector increased by 1.9%
- In February 2026, year-on-year growth in loans to domestic non-financial corporations remained constant (2.5%, as in January; see Table 2), as did growth in loans to domestic households (0.8%, unchanged from the previous month). However, lending to the public sector continued to decline, mainly due to the monetary policy normalization measures implemented by the Bank of France (-5.1% year-on-year, after -3.0% in January).
- In terms of the composition of the money supply, the annual growth rate of overnight deposits increased in February (2.9%, after 2.6% in January). At the same time, the decline in term deposits with a maturity up to 2 years accelerated (8.7% in February after -8.0% in January; see Table 1), and the growth of savings accounts slowed again (1.9%, after 2.2% in January and 2.8% in December 2025).
- Considering gross monetary liabilities and assets vis-à-vis the rest of the euro area, the year-on-year growth of the French component of the M3 monetary aggregate decreased slightly but remained positive at 0.5% (after 0.8% in January).
