Design and manufacture of banknotes

With both a paper mill and printing works, the Banque de France is the largest manufacturer of euro banknotes in the Eurosystem. It produced almost half of the new €20 banknotes put into circulation in the 19 countries using the euro as their currency. It also produces banknotes in other currencies that are exported to some 20 countries. In order to meet the growing requirements for banknote security and quality, the Banque de France is a leader in research and development, focusing in particular on banknote substrates and the design of innovative security features.
