Business failures - France - 2026-09

Published on 6th of November 2026

At the end of September, the number of corporate bankruptcies increased slightly

  • At the end of September 2026, the number of corporate bankruptcies over the last twelve months amounted to 71,139 (see graph 1), slightly higher than in August 2026 (70,768 based on revised data1).

  • With the exception of industry and advisory and business support activities, this increase is observed across all sectors, particularly accommodation and food services, transportation and storage, and wholesale and retail trade, as well as among most firm size categories. (see Table A and B).

  • The level of corporate bankruptcies, which remains high, can be explained in particular by the deteriorating economic climate, as well as to the successive shocks and uncertainties that have weakened the financial position of certain companies.

  • At the same time, the corporate population is growing. According to INSEE, more than 1.3 million enterprises were created at the end of September 2026 over a sliding 12-month period, up 12.2% compared with the cumulative 12 months to the end of September 2025.
