Distributional wealth accounts for the household sector

Distributional wealth accounts are used to analyse the concentration of wealth among different household categories and which investments they prefer. Various quarterly series are compiled for each euro area country, including France. The statistics include: the Gini coefficient; average and median net wealth; the share of net wealth owned by the poorest 50% of households and by the 5% and 10% richest households; the share of each investment instrument held by the different net wealth deciles of the population (D1 to D5, D6, D7, D8, D9 and D10), and according to employment and housing status; the debt-to-asset ratio of each net wealth decile.

Household regulated savings

The Banque de France publishes an annual report on regulated savings, providing detailed statistics on Livret A accounts, sustainable development savings accounts (LDDS), popular savings accounts (LEP) and housing saving plans (PEL). The report assesses the role of regulated savings in households’ asset portfolios relative to other savings products, and shows how the money in these accounts is used to finance social housing or SMEs. It also includes a range of thematic analyses.

Since June 2025, 26 of the Banque de France’s annual statistical series on regulated savings have been recognised as being of general interest by the Public Statistics Authority (ASP). These 26 series can be accessed directly via the Webstat portal and are available under the topic Deposits/Financial investments/Regulated savings.

2025 Annual Report

The 2025 Annual Report examines developments in regulated savings as interest rates continued to normalise throughout the year. Inflows slowed after the exceptionally strong momentum seen between 2022 and 2024, while outstanding holdings remained historically high, reaching nearly €950 billion at end-2025. Some 83% of French people held a Livret A account in 2025 and the number of LEP accounts hit a record 12.1 million. These trends are testament to the enduring popularity of regulated savings accounts and the high level of trust they enjoy among French households.
