Recent data on France’s foreign direct investment
Statistics on direct investment are recorded in the financial account of France’s balance of payments and international investment position. Income effectively paid or received on investments is recorded in the current account of the balance of payments. Similarly, reinvested earnings are recorded as an income flow in the current account, and an investment flow is also recorded in the opposite direction in the financial account under reinvestment of earnings.
Data on annual stocks and flows of direct investment and the associated income are published in the annual report on the French balance of payments and international investment position. They are broken down by country and by sector. Data on flows are broken down by type and are updated quarterly. The total amount of direct investment is estimated monthly and the figures are published in the Stat Info Balance of Payments.
Extensive data on direct investment are available via the Webstat statistics portal.
The application of international standards makes it possible to compare data across countries.
Eurostat (the European Union’s statistical office) provides data on direct investment stocks and flows for the majority of EU countries.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) centralises all foreign direct investment data submitted by its member countries.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) centralises the results of an annual survey on its members’ direct investment stocks, broken down by counterparty country (the Coordinated Direct Investment Survey or CDIS).
The United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) regularly publishes statistics on foreign direct investment worldwide, notably the World Investment Report.
