Portfolio investment in 2008 (2008 Annual Report)
In 2008, portfolio investment showed net inflows for the first time since 2001.
- As regards equities, net outflows were recorded due to the large purchases of foreign securities by French residents.
- Capital inflows corresponded to purchases of French securities, in particular government securities, by non-residents.
- Purchases of securities issued by general government were partly offset by purchases of foreign government securities by French residents.

Non-residents' equity holdings in French CAC 40 companies at end-2008
At 31 December 2008, non-residents had a 39.2% stake in French CAC 40 companies. Euro area shareholders ranked first among non-resident investors in terms of their share in the capital of French CAC40 companies (15.4%).
