Only a few days left to exchange "Delacroix" 100 franc banknotes for euro

After 31 January 2009, it will no longer be possible to exchange "Delacroix" 100 franc banknotes and they will therefore become valueless. Up to Friday 30 January - and before the closing time of branches carrying out the operation - these notes can be exchanged for euro at a number of Banque de France branches(read here).

Exchanging banknotes by mail

Banknotes may now be exchanged by mail, under the following conditions:

  • letters must be sent by registered, or declared value post when the amount sent exceeds FRF 3,000, in accordance with postal standards in the sender's country;

  • only exchangeable franc banknotes are accepted, within the limit of EUR 5,000;

  • the name and address of the addressee must be clearly written;

  • the equivalent amount in euro is rounded down to the nearest EUR 5; it will be sent in euro by declared value post to the address given by the sender.


Letters must be addressed to:

Banque de France DGAFP - Service 18 10, boulevard Duclaux 63407 Chamalières Cedex

Warning: banknotes not complying with the exchange conditions will not be returned; no complaints will be taken into consideration for letters that are not sent by registered or declared value post or incorrectly addressed. Delacroix 100 franc notes for exchange must be posted before midnight on 31 January, as attested by the date on the postmark.

Do not delay! At 31 December 2008, 12.06 million "Delacroix" 100 franc banknotes remained outstanding.

Five other franc banknotes may be exchanged for euro until 17 February 2012:

A word of advice: irrespective of the deadline and the value of the banknotes, do not wait until the last minute.
